NZEI Strike Action

posted Oct 30, 2018, 7:44 PM by Reception @TMCS

We have been advised by NZEI that primary teachers and principal members have voted to undertake unprecedented further strike action this term.  These will be rolling geographical one-day strike actions with our strike day being Tuesday 13th November. On this day the school will be closed for instruction.

The decision to take further strike action was not taken lightly by NZEI and they are aware of the impact strike action can have.  We need to ensure the Government understands how serious we are about the need for urgent changes now. Schools are facing a teacher shortage, with over half of schools reporting they didn’t have enough teachers in term three. There has been a 40% drop in people training to be teachers, while school rolls continue to climb.  The Ministry is currently engaged in an international recruitment drive, in a desperate bid to meet the need. Schools struggle daily to find enough teachers to meet their relief teacher needs.

There is also a critical need for increased support for children with additional learning needs and look at teacher workload and pay to retain passionate, high-quality teachers in our system.

Once again we apologise for the inconvenience our strike will bring but we are trying to draw a line in the sand. We want to stand up for education now and for the future. We hope you will support us in our stand. Tuesday 13th November is an investment for the future of your children’s education.
