From Week 8 through to the end of Term our whole School will be involved in the Keeping Ourselves Safe - Police Education Programme. You should have found a pamphlet in your children’s bags introducing this. Keeping Ourselves Safe is a totally New Zealand based programme and was developed to help keep children safe as New Zealand has the 5th highest rate of child abuse in the developed world, with 150,000 notifications per year. Originally the programme had a Stranger Danger focus, but with 96% of all cases of child abuse, the offender is known to the victim. Stranger Danger is no longer the focus, on as children found it hard to be able to identify what a stranger actually was. A stranger is not always scary! The aim of the programme is to empower children and for them to learn a range of safe practices. 6 different types of abuse are covered in the programme; Cyber and Family violence, Physical, Sexual, Emotional, Neglect. One part that is covered is Confusing Touch – This will include the anatomically correct naming of all body parts. |
