Important Notice - NZEI Paid Union Meeting - Monday 12th September.

posted Aug 24, 2016, 8:59 PM by Reception @TMCS   [ updated Aug 24, 2016, 9:08 PM ]

The New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI)  / Primary Teachers, and Support Staff  Union, is part of a joint whole-of-sector paid union meeting, joining with the Post Primary Teachers Association (PPTA) to inform members about changes occurring in the funding and education area following recent Government announcements and the pending results of the Education Act Review. This Meeting will be taking place on the morning of Monday 12th September.

Alert - Please read the below letter and be aware the implications:

We have been advised that on Monday, 12 September, Tamahere Model Country School teachers and support staff will be required to attend a paid union meeting, starting at 9am.  As a result of this meeting we will not have staff available for teaching classes but our school will remain open to care for a few students who are unable to be accommodated by families. We will have a few teacher aides and student teachers on site to help with this if needed. Please contact the school by Thursday 8th September if you require this cover.

Classes will start at 11.45am and we will finish at the normal time of 2:30pm.

On 12 September we ask, that if possible, all children be kept home until 11.45 am - an extra addition to the weekend. While we appreciate that for many parents/caregivers the timing of this meeting will cause some inconvenience we want to stress that the timing of these type of meetings is out of our control.  We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you in advance for your support.

Dear Parents/Caregivers

The Government has announced a proposal to dramatically change the way schools are funded. Principals and Boards of Trustees would have to make trade-offs between teaching staff and other costs schools face.

Teachers are very worried that the global budget would lead to:

·         fewer teachers and larger class sizes

·         lower quality teaching

·         fewer hours for teacher aides and support staff

·         more complex financial work for Boards of Trustees

The Government's current funding review is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to better fund education. NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA are the unions that represent more than 60,000 teachers and support staff from birth to year 13.  All members are expected to attend meetings in September to hear more about the proposal and help determine the education sector’s response.

The meetings are paid union meetings and it is important for union members in our school to attend these meetings to have a say about how we get better funding, not bulk funding.

While this is an inconvenience at this point in time, we are hoping for a positive outcome which will enhance the learning opportunities for your children, and the future of our New Zealand education system.
