A Message from our Board of Trustees

posted Jul 31, 2018, 8:59 PM by Reception @TMCS

The Board of Trustees at our monthly meeting last night agreed to close our school for instruction for the day of the strike that will occur for all members of the NZEI - Teachers and Principals Union – on Wednesday 15 August.

All our teaching staff are members of the NZEI and are required to strike, and legally we cannot open the school for instruction, without a registered teacher on site.  Those teachers involved in the strike are required to attend meetings and other commitments throughout the day and will not be getting paid to do so.

We understand this is not ideal and is a last resort for the teachers (this is the first time in 24 years they have taken such action) and recognise that it is an interruption to both your child’s learning and your weekly family routine.  Your Board members are all parents too and understand the challenges that a day off school means, and the potential need for taking leave from jobs or arranging childcare.

As a Board however, we are also acutely aware of the challenges faced in the education sector and in particular with a lack of funding for teachers to enable them to do their jobs successfully – educating our children for the future.

Schools are struggling to attract and retain great teachers.  There is also a drop in the number of people choosing to train as teachers.  It is fast becoming a profession at risk and that could significantly affect our school and our tamariki in years to come.

The Board thanks you for your understanding and welcome any communication should you wish to discuss this further.
