Strep Throat Alert

posted May 11, 2017, 8:57 PM by Reception @TMCS

We have received advice that a student has strep throat, this is contagious. Please be aware if your child has a sore throat.

Hillcrest Pharmacy are offering free throat swabs up to the age of 18 if you need to get a throat checked quickly and can't get into the doctors.  Strep throat can lead to rheumatic fever if it is untreated so that sore throat is worth investigating rather than leaving to see if it goes away.

The most characteristic symptoms of strep throat are sore throat and painful swallowing. Other symptoms include:

  • Chills and fever
  • Swollen and tender glands (lymph nodes) on the sides of the neck
  • Red and swollen appearance inside the throat
  • Pus-like white or yellow patches or spots may be visible on the back of the throat and on the tonsils
  • Headache, nausea and vomiting may also be present.
Some people will develop a red skin rash that feels rough to the touch. A strep throat infection accompanied by this distinctive rash is known as scarlet fever. The rash is caused by toxins produced by the streptococcus pyogenes bacterium.

Please contact your health professional if you have any concerns.
